Bruce Harold Modic

03/24/1955 - 12/20/2025
Obituary
Bruce Harold Modic died from a heart attack Dec. 20, 2025, at his residence in Fortuna, Calif. He was 70.

Bruce was born March 24, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio, the youngest of three sons of Robert W. and Anne
Marie (Fifolt) Modic. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, David. He is survived by a
brother, Robert, of Ohio, a niece and a nephew.

Bruce was a free-spirited man who found a welcome new home in northern California. A graduate of
Euclid High School Class of 1973 in Ohio, he attended Baldwin Wallace College for two years and worked
at Fisher Body Division of General Motors in Euclid before transferring to the University of the Pacific,
Stockton, Calif., in January 1975. A year later, he transferred to Humboldt State University in Arcata,
Calif., where he found a new love for basketball while taking a physical education course.

After college, Bruce worked a variety of jobs in Humboldt County, mostly as a framing carpenter; and for
two decades, he enjoyed his dogs and a close circle of friends when he was not fishing, hiking, growing
or playing basketball. The photograph of him was taken in the late 1990s at the mouth of the Klamath
River during a Salmon run. However, just a few years into the new century, he suffered a severe back
injury that incapacitated him for the last 20 years of his life.

Bruce’s family thanks all of those who befriended him over the years, and also those who undertook the
challenges of assisting him in his last years.

A private service for family members will be held at a later date in Ohio.
